After wild fire, the Australian bush seems to sleep for awhile and then in extraordinary profusion, everything begins to grow again. Epicormic buds hidden deep beneath the bark of trees spring into red leaf, and under the sterile ash bed, vigorous shoots of chartreuse green and pink become the new forest that rises up from the ashes to cloak the landscape in a mantle of silvery, grey green trees. And so, as I am steeped in all of this beautiful, wonderful, arid place of extremes, this binding of soul and the earth, of words and images, that tell it as it was and as it is, becomes my story. As you sleep, I burn.
Here, at Tumbledown, it is I who am owned by the forest.

Your observation defines the circle of nature
expressed in the saying “From ashes to ashes.”

Thank you for understanding, Lu Mar. Here ashes are essential to growth, and fire is vital to the cycles of life. Charcoal and white ash are the continuum between two extremes of life and death.

Hi Jayn
xxxxxx
I spoke with Lach this morning as I hadn’t heard from my old mate since he relocated from Highgate Hill this year.
I used to sing in the band Natives of Bedlam & i remember you from those 90’s days. I have lived in Tasmania since year 2000. I too live on a private lot surrounded by 10,000 acres of reserve forrest. I am compelled to be custodian of the magnificent wildlife here and give them a hand when the weather conditions aren’t favourable for foraging. I live totally off grid & use a generator to top-up the solar system when winter days challenge the sun rays. So good to know you’re taking care of the wildlife. It’s a responsibity, a blessing and a joy. Xx love Marita
